MLS to Adopt Global Football Calendar in 2027

Major League Soccer has approved a historic shift: beginning in the summer of 2027, the league will move to a summer–spring season, aligning for the first time with the world’s top football leagues. The decision was finalized during the MLS Board of Governors meeting in Palm Beach, marking one of the most significant structural changes in league history.

New Season Structure

The 2027–28 MLS season will start in July 2027 and conclude in May 2028, with a winter break from mid-December to early February.

Before the change, a short transition season will run from February to May 2027, helping determine qualification for the U.S. Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup.

Why MLS Is Changing

The league highlighted several key benefits:

Better access to the global transfer market, allowing clubs to operate in sync with major international windows. Improved integration of summer signings, who can join before the start of the MLS season. Fewer conflicts with FIFA international dates, especially during summer tournaments. Playoffs moved to May, securing a stronger position in the sports calendar without interruptions.

A Decision Backed by Fans and Clubs

This change follows a two-year review involving clubs, players, league officials, and supporters. Research showed 92% of frequent MLS viewers support the move, citing better player performance, improved alignment with international competitions, and a more natural postseason schedule.

MLS also conducted climate and logistical studies to ensure match quality and fan experience — with plans to reduce winter home games in northern markets.

Reactions From Around the League

U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino, former USMNT captain Clint Dempsey, and several MLS executives praised the change, calling it a crucial step toward elevating the league’s global competitiveness and improving player pathways.

More details on the transition season, the 2027–28 campaign, and updated competition formats will be announced in the coming months.
