The Finalissima between Argentina and Spain never happened, but football found a much bigger stage for this matchup.

The Copa América champions and European champions will now meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final. Argentina is trying to defend its title, while Spain is looking to win the World Cup for the second time.

A lot of the attention will be on Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal. Messi became a legend at Barcelona, while Lamine is now one of the biggest stars of the club’s new generation. It feels like a meeting between two different eras of Barcelona, but this time with the biggest trophy in football on the line.

Messi is playing in another World Cup Final near the end of his career. Lamine, at only 19, is already preparing for the biggest match of his young career.

The Finalissima was supposed to give us Argentina against Spain. Instead, we are getting that matchup in the World Cup Final, and it could not be on a bigger stage.
