Leagues Cup 2025: New Format with More MLS vs. LIGA MX Matches

The Leagues Cup 2025 will feature an updated format, focusing exclusively on direct matches between MLS and LIGA MX clubs until the quarterfinals. The tournament, sanctioned by Concacaf, will take place in the U.S. and Canada from July 29 to August 31, 2025, running alongside the regular seasons of both leagues.

Tournament Structure

36 teams: 18 from LIGA MX and 18 from MLS (top 9 from each MLS conference based on the 2024 season).

Two rounds:

First Phase (July 29 – August 7): Each team plays three group-stage matches against clubs from the opposite league.

Knockout Rounds: The top 4 teams from each league advance to the quarterfinals, ensuring MLS vs. LIGA MX matchups.

Key Features

No ties: Matches tied after 90 minutes go to penalties; winners earn an extra point.

Concacaf Champions Cup Qualification: The top 3 teams will qualify for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.

VAR Technology & Referees: Provided by Concacaf.
