MEXICO DEFEATS SOUTH AFRICA IN WORLD CUP 2026 OPENER

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially underway, and Mexico became the first team to earn three points in the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa at a packed Estadio Azteca.

El Tri made an early statement when Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the tournament just nine minutes into the match. Raúl Jiménez added a second goal in the second half to seal the win and give the hosts a dream start to their World Cup campaign.

The match was one of the most dramatic opening games in recent World Cup history, featuring more red cards than goals. South Africa finished the match with nine players after two dismissals, while Mexico also saw a player sent off late in the game.

Before kickoff, fans were treated to a colorful opening ceremony featuring performances from Shakira, Andrea Bocelli, and J Balvin. The event celebrated the start of the biggest World Cup ever, with 48 teams competing across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Mexico’s victory gives the hosts an early boost as they look to make a deep run in front of their home fans. With the tournament now underway, the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final has officially begun.
